Bee-eaters, common breeders during summer.

Curlew Sandpipers and Little Stints are common migrants in May.

The Greek island of Lesvos is probably my favourite place for birding and photographing. The island itself is as many other Aegian islands dry and rocky, but it is very diverse. A large part of the island is covered by trees, mostly pine and olive trees.

The western half of the island is the dryest, with very few trees and only low bushes, called scrub.

The area inside the big Kalloni Bay in the central part of Island is very rich, with rivers running down into a dense area with fields and Salt Pans.

The area around the Salt Pans provides the best birding on the island, with lots of shorebirds, egrets, storks, falcons and passerines.

I have really enjoyed all of my three trips to Lesvos, and recommend it for both birdwatchers and birdphotographers.

Visited: April/May 2007, April/May 2008 & May 2009.
