Yellow Wagtail ssp thunbergi, the northern subspecies.

One of the small streams around Abisko.

The very northern part of Sweden, more than 1500 km north of Stockholm, is a rather exotic place. Great mountains arise around the shoreline of Torne träsk, a big lake made of melted snow and ice.

Abisko lies along the southern shoreline on Torne träsk and by the foot of the great mountain Noulja. The valley around Abisko is filled with streams running down to the lake, creating a river delta and lots of small wetlands.

The mountain Noulja provides all the typical high altitude-species like Long-tailed Skua, Dotterel, Golden Plover, Ptarmigan and Ring Ouzel.
